TRAINING: GeoGuessr.com

At the GeoGuessr.com website, students are placed at various locations in the United States, Europe, or the world (based on the game setting), and have to select the location on a map, based on the clues about the environment. The closer the student's location guess is to the actual location, the more points the student receives.

Geoguessr can be accessed on any device with a web browser, and an app is also available. Once at the site, students can scroll down to select the area/category they would like to compete in. However,
teachers can create their own GeoGuessr games at GeoSettr.com. Once a teacher arrives at the site, they select five locations, and an unique url is provided for students to enter the Challenge. For instance, if students are learning about state capitals, a teacher could create a GeoGuessr Challenge, selecting five capitals, and students would have to determine the correct capitals based on clues in the given pictures.

TRAINING: The Oregon Trail Interactive Game

The Oregon Trail Interactive Game is a web-based version of the classic Apple II game created by MECC. Students lead a wagon party  from Independence, Missouri to the Willamette River in Oregon. Students must stock up on food and supplies, and then must make decisions on what pace to travel at, how much food to consume, and how to cross deadly rivers. The game utilizes historical simulation and strategy-based problem solving.

Students require a device with a web browser, and it works much better on laptops than tablets or phones. Beneath is a video walk through for teachers to get a sense of the game and whether it is appropriate for their students. Games generally take 30 minutes to complete.
